The “Genealogy of Fan” 範氏族譜 from Nanguan settlement 南關 contains a record that in 1404, an ancestor of Fans Yinglong moved here from Hongtong county 洪洞 in Shanxi and dwelled with his family in one of the villages; he was an artist and knew how to do trade; generations of his descendants had been making and selling pictures. During the rule of Kangxi 康熙 (1661–1723), Dongdaxingdian workshop 東大興店 was managed by his eleventh-generation descendant Fan Cui, who divided the workshop among his sons. They were named Dongdaxingdian 東大興店 and Xidaxingdian 西大興店 and were located in Nanguan settlement. During the rule of Jiaqing 嘉慶 (1796–1820) Dongdaxing shop was divided into four workshops, one of which retained the original name. At the end of Qing dynasty, this workshop was among the ‘eight major houses’ of Wuqiang county; the number of pictures issued there reached two hundred thousand sheets. Theatre scenes were one of the main themes of this workshop production. It is said in the Feng Jicai’s edition that just nine pictures of this workshop have survived to the present time; thereby, there are no theatre pictures among them, but only images of deities 1 . This fact indicates the special value of the print from the MAE RAS collection. MAE No.675–48/18 (fig. 13) A picture illustrating a scene from the XVI century novel “The Investiture of the Gods” 封神演義 contains the following inscription in the upper part: “Zhao Gongming Descending from the Mountains” 趙公明下山 . Zhao Gongming 趙公明 was a Taoist magician whose counterpart was another Daoist Jiang Ziya 姜子牙 , the legendary events took place in the era of wars between Shang and Zhou dynasties. Later Zhao Gongming became revered as the god of wealth. The scene shown in the picture is fromChapter 47 “Gongming is Helping Mentor Wen Taishi” 公明輔佐聞太師 . In the centre of the picture Zhao Gongming is shown riding a tiger and with a whip-like blade in his hand; with the other hand, he has captured an enemy. Zhao Gongming descended from the Emeishan Mountains to help Wen Taishi in fights in the area of Xiqi 西岐 (Shaanxi Province). Supporters of Jiang Ziya were acting against Zhao Gongming, general Yang Jian 楊戩 , standing to the right, has hounded a huge dog on him, while Nezha 哪咤 flying on fiery wheels is spurting fire in his direction.
