However, Dong Hong was seized again by Liu Yinglong and sent to prison of the county government, where he met Zhang Rong. Dong Hong, Zhang Rong and a prison guard Li Hu (coincides with the name of the woodblock print) became sworn brothers. To restore justice Li Hu helped to send the letter fromDong to the Shundefu Prefecture; soldiers surrounded Liu Yinglong’s house and seized him; Dong Hong attended the tyrant’s execution and later married Ruilian.” Tao Junqi points that this plot is performed in regional theatres of Shanxi, Hunan, Hebei, Sichuan and Shaanxi 1 . According to another version, a hostage girl named Huang Rumei, upon seeing Dong Hong languishing in the water jail, took his seal and the letter to the government of the Guangpingfu Prefecture and thanks to her help he was released. It is worth noting that the prints about Dong Hong (MAE No. 675–48/14) feature the famous historical character Hai Rui 海瑞 (1514–1578), an honest official of the Ming era, although Hai Rui is mentioned in the synopsis to the play about Du Wenxue. The play about Dong Hong features an honest jail keeper Li Hu, there is a character of the same name in the story about DuWenxue, but there he is a villain. It is difficult to say whether such ‘wanderings’ of characters are intentional, but probably this implies a common author of the boards, from which the pictures were printed. MAE No. 675–48/15 (fig. 12) Avertical print with the plot of the play “Picking Jade Bracelet” 拾玉鐲 contains the following inscription: “Newly Cut Board about the Jade Bracelet” 新刻雙玉 鐲 . The prints contains seven scenes, each numbered and furnished with a short explanatory comment; names of characters are inscribed: 1. The upper part on the left: 頭出孫寡婦同兄嫂古寺降香 Opening scene.
