The upper part on the left: 出九送官 Ninth scene. Seeing off a public official. A public official Zhang Feng is sitting at the table, beside him there is a seal wrapped in cloth. Dong Hong and Li Hu 李虎 are kneeling in front of him with hands folded reverently. 2. 出十結拜 Tenth scene. An oath of sworn brothers. In front of an altar of the god of the jail Yu Shen 獄神 , Dong Hong, Zhang Jinzhong 張盡忠 and Li Hu are kneeling and making an oath. The women standing to the left (their names are Pang and Le) are watching this. 3. 出十一出狱 Eleventh scene. Coming out of the jail. Dong Hong and Zhang Jinzhong have folded their hands reverently, thanking Li Hu who is standing opposite them. In the left hand bottom corner there is a workshop mark “Junxingyong” 俊興永 . These two sheets (MAE No. 675–48/14, MAE No. 675–48/16) feature scenes from the play “Merge of a Pair of Seals” 雙合印 , which is also known under the title “Guangpingfu Prefecture” 廣平府 . In his study Tao Junqi provides the following content of the “Merge of a Pair of Seals” play: “Tyrant Liu Yinglong 劉應龍 (the woodblock print contains homonymic characters– LiuYinglong 刘英龍 ) became too powerful, he killed inspector Huang Chaozong 黄朝宗 who had been sent to him, slandered a man of letters Zhang Rong 張榮 (on the woodblock print he is Zhang Jinzhong 張盡忠 ) and forced the latter’s wife to go with him. Having learned about his crimes, the new inspector Dong Hong 董洪 (the woodblock print contains homonymic characters — 董宏 ), disguised as a diviner and arrived to that location with a private visit, met Zhang’s mother and helped her to write a complaint. Thereafter, he paid a visit to Liu Yinglong’s house and seized him out to a water jail. Dong Hong found a golden seal in jail, which belonged to the previous inspector Huang Chaozong. According to another version of this story, in the last episode Dong Hong saw a corpse of the former inspector and beside him a seal, the same as his own. Liu Yinglong had ruined the father of a girl named Li Ruilian 李瑞莲 and made her his servant.At night she paid a visit to the jail to rescue Dong Hong, but he saw that the walls were too high. He exchanged the girl for the golden seal, they got engaged and decided to run
