The upper part on the left: 一出領印 First scene. Obtaining the seal. A large seal wrapped in cloth is lying on the table, the Ming emperor Jiajing 嘉靖 (1522–1566) is sitting at the table; below, at the sides, there are two public officials Hai Rui 海瑞 and Yan Chong 閆崇 . Dong Hong 董宏 is kneeling in front of the emperor and the officials are holding imperative board huban 笏版 with both hands indicating that this is a scene of an audience with the emperor. 2. The upper part on the right: 二出賣卜 Second scene. Selling [sheets with the results of] divination. Dong Hong is standing with his back to the altar with a statue of the deity Qitian dawang 齊天[大王] holding two long yellow sheets of paper with explanations of the results of the divination; in front of him, two women of Pang family 龐氏 and of Lei family 雷氏 are standing and listening. 3. The bottom part on the right: 三出屈打 Third scene. Insulting by beating. At the table, whereon a large seal wrapped in cloth is lying, a public official named Zhang Feng 張鳳 is sitting. At the sides, two servants with bamboo canes are standing, preparing to punish a public official Zhang Jinzhong 張 盡忠 standing in front of them and pleading for mercy. 4. The bottom part on the left: 四出強親 Fourth scene. Kidnapping the bride. Behind the door of the house, the Lei woman is hiding, the Pang woman is chasing after an escaping man named Liu Yinglong 刘英龍 with a large kitchen knife. The bottom left corner of the picture has an impression with the name of the workshop “Junxing huadian” 俊興畫店 . MAE No. 675–48/12 (fig. 11) A print illustrating a plot of the play “Merging Pair of Seals” contains the inscription on the top “Dong Hong Comes out of the Water Jail” 董宏出水牢 . The left part of the picture was probably lost, only the right part survived.
