In the right-hand bottom corner, there is a mark with the name of the workshop “Yangliuqing junxing dian” 楊柳青俊興店 . In the repertory of Shanxi drama genre jinju 晉劇 , there is a play with the same name of the following content: “In the Ming era, there lived a county chief Dong Jie, he grew old and had no children, his elder wife was lady Xu, the second one was Liu Ruoying, the third one was Yu Erzhen 庾倪真 . Liu Ruoying got pregnant making Erzhen jealous; the latter ordered a servant to dress like a demoness and fool Dong Jie, later she said a demon had dwelled in Ruoying’s womb and she must be killed. Servant Xiu Chun denounced this fraud to the first wife lady Xu, who ordered to hide the servant and Ruoyingin in the Jasper Hut until the child was born. The baby had a necklace with a mirror and a qilin on its neck. Wei Dian stole the child and brought him to Zhao Cong’s house as if Zhao’s wife had given birth to this baby. Zhao Cong took the child to play with a lantern, and then Xu’s servant Yuanzhen substituted him with a girl, having hung the mirror with a qilin on the girl’s neck. The girl suffered abuse in Zhao’s family. Once she went to pick sticks and met the servant Xiu Chun and Liu Ruoying; upon seeing the mirror with qilin on her neck, they took the girl to a public official. There, they met general Xu Ming, then they went to the main hall of Xu Jietang’s house; the case was investigated. Ruoying recognized the boy as her son, his name was Dong Shiqi, he got the title of laureate zhuangyuan in Beijing, and the girl was returned to Xu’s house. Dong Jie was transferred to Chongqing; he missed his wives Xu and Ruoying and referring to his old age he asked for retirement and returned to his native lands. Rezhen did not want to go, she wanted to set a fire and kill Dong Jie, but died in the flames herself. After retirement Dong Jie heard that his son had become a zhuangyuan , he became curious and learned the true story from his wives, the family reunited. Dong Xieshi married a girl from the Xu family”. This indicates that the plot shown on the woodblock print was changed; the story with substitution of the child and the mirror with a qilin is missing. MAE No. 675–48/14, MAE No. 675–48/16 (fig. 10) Aprint depicting the play “Merging a Pair of Seals” 雙合印 contains the following inscription in the upper corner “Newly Cut [Board] of an Extended [Narration] about Dong Hong” 新刻董宏廣 . The left part of the picture is probably lost, only the right part survived. The picture shows four scenes, each numbered and furnished with a short explanatory comment; names of characters are inscribed.
