Zhou Ren returned home and told it to his wife, who went to the residency, calling herself Du Wenxue’s wife and intending to kill Yan Nian, but, having failed, the woman had to stab herself to death. DuWenxue escaped from exile and met his acquaintance Wang Sigong, who gave him a letter about his wife’s death. He misunderstood that Zhou Ren had betrayed him in order to gain profit, and Du Wenxue was filled with hatred. On his way, he met Hai Rui 海瑞 with an army, their joint campaign ended in victory; Du Wenxue got his post back, the case was revised at a court. Yan Nian and Feng Chengdong were executed, Zhou Ren was arrested and punished with canes, but at this point Wang Sigong and Du Wenxue’s wife appeared and told the real story. Du Wenxue repented, but Zhou Ren died of the blows received” 1 . Tao Junqi indicates that this plot is based on the Ming chuanqi play “Heroism of the Just and Faithful” 忠義烈 , it is performed in local drama genres of Hebei 河北 , Sichuan 四川 and Shaanxi 陕西 2 . Wang Shucun’s study “Xylographic Pictures of the Beijing Opera” mentions a print with Zhous’ conversation with his wife (plate 200), when they are thinking how to save the master’s wife 3 . The album “Rare Chinese Folk Pictures from Russian Collections” edited by B.L.Riftin features a woodblock print from the collection of the Russian Geographic Society called “Little Ding is Searching for His Father” produced at Yangliuqing. The commentary to this print describes a story resembling the one shown on our print from Schrenk’s collection. A comment states that the woodblock print from Yangliuqing was based on an oral narrative, not a play. The issue of the existence of a play or narration about Du Wenxue deserves a further study 4 . MAE 675–48/13 (fig. 9) A picture to a play plot, representing a vertical image, the upper part of which contains the following inscription: “Newly Cut Board about the Mirror with Auspicious Qilin” 新刻祥麟鏡 . Apparently, only the right half of the picture survived. The picture shows six scenes, each numbered and furnished with a short comment; names of main characters are inscribed selectively. 1.
