The man does not want to shoot an elk, But only a wolf, so that he could get a wolf’s heart. Such rhymed sayings could probably be performed prior to theatre performances or be a cross talk xiangsheng 相聲 . MAE No.675–48/10 (fig. 7) A vertical image depicting a historical scene or a shot of daily life. The upper part contains an inscription “APicture of the Inspection of Combat Ships Exercises” 演戰船之圖 . The upper part of the picture shows construction of fortifications: scaffoldings are being mounted, a wall is being built. In front of the wall, a public official — probably, a fleet inspector — is watching the fight on the water. The lower part of the picture shows five boats with armed people; warriors on two of them are dressed in gowns resembling tiger skins. All warriors are facing right — opponent ships must be located in that direction. Possibly, it shows China before the Opium wars. The lower part of the picture has a mark of the workshop “Junxingyong ji” 俊 興永記 . MAE No. 675–48/11 1 , MAE No. 675–48/17 (fig. 8) A vertical picture depicting a plot of a play or of an oral narration has an inscription in the upper part, “Newly Cut [Picture] about Ding Lang’s Search [for his Father]” 新刻丁郎找 . Apparently, only the right part of the picture survived; probably, the full title of the depicted play is “Ding Lang is Searching for His Father» 丁郎找爹 . The picture shows seven scenes, each numbered and furnished with a short comment; names of main characters are inscribed selectively. The translation of the descriptive captions to the scenes: 1 Two collection numbers are provided for a single picture, since both items are copies of the same picture.
