When the wine shop flourishes, the tea house shall not become poor. 長為兄弟，須得始終。 You must always be like brothers. 若人讀之一本，永世不害酒顛茶瘋。 If people read this poem, they shall never suffer from wine madness or tea insanity. The Chinese manuscript of the X century “Dispute of Tea and Wine” therefore, by using witty form reflects the roles of two civilized drinks: wine and tea. In the history of world culture, these drinks have long accompanied religious, ritualistic, secular, and even everyday activities of different sectors of society, and served as two of the most important sources of inspiration in literary and artistic creation. It is significant to note that the two main characters do not aim to personify specific drinks such as wine, vodka, green or black tea, but act as symbolic “alcoholic” and “non-alcoholic” beverages in a metaphorical and spiritual sense. This is undoubtedly indicated by similar texts in Tibetan, Mongolian and Altai traditions, where key antagonists are considered drinks characteristic of national cultures. In this regard, this text can be considered as a civilizational archetype which, even today, is still being produced by modern cultures. References 1. Ahmetshin N. H.
