Far East, South and South-East Asia / Дальний Восток, Южная и Юго-Восточная Азия 582 Proceedings of the International Congress on Historiography and Source Studies of Asia and Africa.Vol. I. 2020 阿闍世王為酒殺父害母 1 ，劉伶為酒一 死 三年 2 。 [Indian] ruler Adjatashatru under the influence of wine killed his father and mother, Liu Ling was drunk to death [on wine] for three years. 吃了張眉豎眼，怒鬥宣拳。狀上只言粗豪酒醉，不曾有茶醉相言 3 。 After drinking [wine], the eyebrows frown, the eyes bulge, anger sets in, fist fighting ensues. Drunks’speech fromwine becomes rude, which does not happen in conversations of those intoxicated by tea. 不免求守杖子，本典索錢。大枷磕頂，背上拋椽。 [A drunkard] cannot escape punishment with sticks, by law they will have to pay a fine. They will put a cangue on their neck [which will] beat them on the head, and [they] will have to carry on [their] back. 便即燒香斷酒，念佛求天，終身不吃，望免迍邅。 [It is best to] immediately burn incense and stop drinking, pray to Buddha and ask Heaven [for mercy], to not drink until your death, hoping for liberation from suffering. Conclusion 兩家正爭人我，不知水在旁邊。 Thus [Tea and Wine] continued arguing and did not notice Water approaching. 水謂茶酒曰 ：阿你兩個 4 ，何用匆匆？ Water addresses Tea and Wine: Ah both of you, why rush [with conclusions]? 阿誰許你，各擬論功！ Who will believe you? Each [of you] ascribes [yourselves alleged] merit! 言辭相毀，道西說東。 You slander one another, one speaks about the west, the other talks about the east. 1 The conversation is about Indian King Ajatashatru who lived around 493–461 years BC. He took the throne by killing his father Bimbisara. However there is no reliable historical information about the true cause of this atrocity. 2 See the above-mentioned story about the poet Liu Ling. 3 The expression 茶醉 chazui «intoxication by tea» carries a metaphorical character. 4 In the original text of this particular phrase, between characters 阿你 а ni and 兩個 liangge there are two more characters — 何用 heyong meaning “why?”, “to what?” (the addition of these is likely an error).
