In the state music sounds, originally wine is the source [of rituals]. 終朝吃你茶水,敢動些些管弦! If one was to drink tea all day long, then who would undertake playing musical instruments?! Round 5 茶謂酒曰 :阿你不見道:男兒十四五,莫與酒家親 4 。 T ea addresses Wine: You fail to see the point: young people aged 14–15 cannot be related to the wine [merchants’] family. 君不見猩猩,為酒喪其身 5 ? Have you not you heard of the monkey that lost its life because of wine? 阿你即道:茶吃發病,酒吃養賢。 You claim as if tea causes disease, and wine shows talents. 即見道有酒癀酒病,不見道有茶瘋茶顛 6 ? Everyone can see that wine leads to disease, but can [one] say that tea causes madness? 1 Here again, Wine reproaches Tea for its cheapness. 2 In the original text, this phrase contains the mistakenly repeated character 泉 quan “source”. 3 This phrase emphasizes the significant role of music in the social life of ancient China, which along with wine and dancing was an integral part of most rites and celebrations at the court of the emperor and in the life of the common people. 4 This phrase sounds like a warning to young people not to marry the daughter of an innkeeper or a wine merchant — perhaps in order to shield young men from the temptation of excessive consumption of wine. 5 This implies a popular moralizing parable about two monkeys who, with their immoder- ate passion for wine, killed all their relatives. The author of this parable is the famous teacher and literary scholar Liu Yuanqing (1544–1609). 6 This part uses the artistic technique of paired constructions: the phrase consists of two expressions with the same number of characters, eight characters each. The author intentionally uses parallel constructions of words, achieving maximum emotional effect.
