Round 4 茶謂酒曰 ：我三十成名，束帶巾櫛，驀海騎 2 江，來朝今室。 Tea addresses Wine: I became famous at 30 [years], put on my formal dress and [pricked in] a comb, crossed the sea and the river on a horse, and now arrived at court. 將到市廛，安排未畢，人來買之，錢則盈溢。 Having arrived to the market stands, before [the goods] have been laid out, people already flock to buy and money flows like a river. 言下便得富饒，不在後日明朝。 In a word, I quickly grow rich, in just a few days. 阿你酒能昏亂，吃了多饒啾唧，街中羅織平人，脊上少須十七。 And you, Wine, you will cause confusion. Having drunk too much, chatting in vain, insulting passers-by on the street. You will receive 17 [sticks] on the back! 酒謂茶曰 ：豈不見古人才子，吟詩盡道：渴來一盞，能生養命。 Wine addresses Tea: Can you not see —  the talented people of antiquity writing poems, said: “Having drunk one cup [of wine], one can give birth to life energy”. 又道：酒是消愁藥。 [They] also affirmed: wine is the medicine to dispel sadness. 又道：酒能養賢。 Also [they] said: wine can show talents. 古人糟粕 3 ，今乃流傳。 Wine has come down from ancient times to our days. 1 Potentially the term 水病 shuibing (“water sickness“) implies dropsy, an illness in which there is an impairment of fluid metabolism in the human body, which is accompanied by oedema. People of that time associated this with excessive fluid intake —water, or in this case cheap tea. 2 In the original text, character 騎 qi (“riding horseback“) is replaced with character 其 qi ( pronoun or a grammatical index). 3 The term 糟粕 zaopo (“grounds”, “grains”) is used here as an indication of expensive raw materials (a secondary winemaking product) in the production of alcoholic beverages.
