Round 1 茶乃出來言曰 ：諸人莫鬧，聽說些些。 Tea appears and says: People: quieten down, listen a little. 百草之首，萬木之花，貴之取蕊，重之摘芽，呼之茗草，號之作茶。 [I] — the prime of one hundred herbs, the [first] flower among ten thousand trees, the most expensive of the collected pistils and buds, [they call me] the famous plant, or Tea. 貢五侯 2 宅，奉帝王家 3 ，時新獻入，一世榮華。 [I am] presented to the houses of nobility and to the imperial court of the Emperor. When [I am] brought in fresh, [I] bring glory, splendor and prosperity for life. 1 It is likely that here, the traditional custom of decorating the entrance of a building with pairs of benevolent inscriptions is assumed. Topics about the world of feelings or great desires, various aphorisms, historical events, descriptions of landscapes, criticism and satire, competitions of wit and cunningness and others were found within the content of these pairs of inscriptions (Gu Xiangyang. Zhongguo duilianxue yanjiu ( 谷向陽。中國對聯學研究 ). [The study of the Chinese paired inscriptions]. Beijing daxue xuebao, chuxiao chubanshe, 1998. P. 127). It can be assumed that after a victory in various competitions, similar inscriptions may have also been posted. 2 The term 五侯 wuhou literally translates as «five princes», meaning aristocracy in a broader sense. 3 Because of the folds and abrasions in the original text of 原卷 yuan-juan it is difficult to reconstruct two characters : 王 wang and 家 jia .
