Pelliot Foundation, full of errors, inaccurate usage, various blots, as well as a text reconstructed by Chinese researchers, correcting semantic errors and misprints 1 . This circumstance revealed various issues during the course of translation. First of all, understanding the original text of the X century, inscribed in the classical written language 文言 wenyan makes it difficult to avoid punctuation, which in turn makes it very difficult to understand the division of the text, its structure and basic stylistic features. It would seem that during the reconstruction of the content, the work of Chinese researchers included a stage connected with the identification of the semantic and grammatical boundaries of sentences, and their designation of suitable punctuation. Presumably, the discrepancy between the original and the reconstructed text consisted of three aspects: the replacement of one character with another based on the same sound (for example, 教 jiao and 交 jiao ); replacing one character for another on the basis of a mismatch of signs on the key, which could have been due to either a conscious choice or human error by the author or copyist of the text (for example, in the copy 原卷 yuan-juan character 杭 is replaced with 坑 ); the addition or absence of certain characters based on semantic content. The following translation of “Dispute of Tea and Wine” was based on the original manuscript from the National Library of France (Ms. “Pelliot fonds chinois 2718”), though other manuscripts and previous translations were taken into account. 2 The translation is accompanied by the necessary historical and philological commentaries. 1 For an example of the text reconstructed by Chinese researchers, see: Fu Jinquan.
