Ling Hun ( 靈魂 ), or Zhu Hun ( 主魂 ), or Tian Hun ( 天魂 ). An immortal part of San Hun, receptacle of consciousness. Seven Ying souls are manifestations of the vital force, its physical aspect 1 . Both — Hun and Po — have names: “A human has three Hun ; their names are Shuang Ling ( 爽靈 ), Tai Guang ( 胎光 ) 2 and You Jing ( 幽精 ). Pronouncing of these names makes the souls comfort the body” [comment to «Huang ting neijing jing» ( 黃庭內景經 ), ch. 19 «Ruo de» ( 若得 ) in «Yun ji qi qian», ( 雲笈七籤 ), juan 11 3 ]. Pos’ names are Shi Gou ( 尸狗 ), Fu Shi ( 伏失 ), Que Yin ( 雀陰 ), Tun Zei ( 吞賊 ), Fei Du ( 非毒 ), Yu Hui ( 餘穢 ), Chou Fei ( 臭肺 ) [comment to «Huang ting neijing jing» ( 黃庭內景經 ), ch. 11 «Gan bu» ( 肝部 ) in «Yun ji qi qian», ( 雲笈七籤 ), juan 11 4 ]. Though it is quite obvious that there is not such a phenomenon as a detached soul in Chinese tradition, stories of a soul replacing a human for a certain period remain commonly popular in the traditional Chinese literature 5 . Sometimes the collection of all the ten souls works as a substitute of a living person. For instance, in the mentioned above story “Qi Tui’s Daughter” ( 齊推女 ) all the hun and po of the premature deceased girl are collected and glued together with a special potion, after which the girl returns to life, gets married, has children and nobody could ever be wise to the fact that her physical body has decayed in the grave many years ago [Taiping Guang Ji, juan 358 6 ]. One thing is crystal clear at this point — all the souls have left the girl’s body and later all of them were glued together. But in most of cases this data is far from being correctly explained. One of the most prominent works of this kind is the short-story by Chen Xuan-you ( 陳玄祐 , 8–9 cent.) «Record About The Separated Soul» ( 離魂記 ). 1 For more details q. v. StorozhukA. G.
