Saritas Eyup (Istanbul University, Turkey) Russian Sinologist Iakinf Bichurin’s Impact on Chinese Studies: Evaluation and Analysis Nikita Yakovlevich (monastic name — Hyacinth, or Iakinf) Bichurin (1775– 1953), one of the most eminent Russian sinologists (presumably having Chuvash roots), is especially known in the Turkic scholarly milieu for his translations of the Turk-relating materials from classical Chinese sources into Russian. Iakinf Bich- urin was the head of the 9 th Russian Clerical mission in Beijing where he stayed for 14 years and did research on political structure, economy, history and culture of China, as well as collected important materials in many significant fields and disci- plines at first hand . Those materials laid the foundation for his further Sinological studies. In 1828 he was elected as a corresponding member of the Russian Royal Academy of Sciences; after that, in 1831, he was nominated as a honorary member of the Asian Society in Paris. We can assert today that the 9th Russian Clerical mission was the first one where the academic sinological studies actually commenced. Iakinf Bichurin translated many Chinese historic works including “Zizhi Tongjian Gangmu”, writings on Tibet and Mongolia, such as “Xizang Jishi”, “Zhungaer he Dong Tuerqisitan de Yuangu he Xianzhuang Jishu”; these translations were highly estimated in Russia and abroad. Bichurin’s researches and translations contain valuable information on a great number of ethnic groups inhabitingMongolia, Tibet, CentralAsia and China. Having produced a great impact on Russian sinology, Iakinf Bichurin contributed a great deal to the development of European sinology in general. The goal of the present paper is to evaluate Bichurin’s impact on sinology as it is covered in modern Chinese studies. Elena O.
