Ч. 1 55 Секция I. «Книга в истории и культуре Востока»: к 200-летию Восточного собрания Санкт-Петербургского Университета “The Book in Oriental History and Culture”: On the Occasion of the 200th Anniversary of the Oriental Collection at the University of St Petersburg Zhao Daying (National Library of China, Beijing, China) Triegnum and Heraldry: The Gift from Pope Paul V to the Chinese Jesuit Mission As a historical evidence of Sino-western cultural exchanges in the 17–18th Century, the Jesuit Library in China can be traced back to the Matteo Ricci (1552– 1660), who brought western books into the mainland China, in particular to Beijing. According to the Library Construction Plan (Bibliothekenstrategie) by Niccolò Longobardo (1565–1655), Nicolas Trigault (1577–1628) collected many books and instruments from Europe during his stay in 1617 and 1618. Among those books, the most famous ones are the gift from Pope Paul V, with the gorgeous binding by Horace Cardon who worked for the Pope’s Library. Those books had really striking features, such as red leather covers, and the Tregnum and Heraldry of the Pope in gold. Under the protection of later Jesuits, Johann Adam Schall von Bell (1592–1666), Ferdinand Verbiest (1623–1688), especially the Congregation Missionaries Mathieu Suè (1780–1860, a Chinese Christian), and Mgr. Joseph-Martial Mouly (1856–1868), over 5000 western books of the former Jesuit Library were safely stored in the library. After the Second OpiumWar, Mgr. Mouly moved the Jesuit Library to Pei-T’ang (North Church), and asked Jean-Baptiste-Raphaël Thierry (1823–1880) to make a catalogue. In 1949, Hubert Germain Verhaeren (1877–?) published the Catalogue of the Pei-T’ang Library , in which we could comb for the Pope’s gift. This paper aims
